The title 2nd Chance is a symbolic one for musical legend Karen Clark Sheard (daughter of the late Mattie Moss-Clark and one of The Clark Sisters), beyond the obvious -- it being her second solo album. Following a devastating setback during minor surgery in 2001, she quickly lapsed into a coma and was given only a 2% chance at ever recovering. But not only did she recover, she awoke with a renewed desire to share her faith and her testimony with any who will listen.
Thus, 2nd Chance is, in a way, Sheard's refreshed beliefs and her own story set to music. Most especially on the album's signature track, "If I Can't Say A Word," which was written for Sheard and produced by Donald Lawrence, where she says, even if you can't speak and you can barely move, you can still find a way to praise the Lord. Other songs run the gamut from inspirational to contemporary gospel to jazz to old-school gospel, and she rises to each challenge with her acclaimed vocals. - Robin Parrish
