FM Static is a side project from Thousand Foot Krutch members Trevor McNevan and Steve Augustine which offers McNevan an opportunity few artists ever get -- the chance to explore another aspect of his musical tastes. Unlike the hard-edged sounds of TFK, FM Static is pure pop/rock.
The songs on What Are You Waiting For? are exclusively of the love song variety, delivered with giddy vitality that will raise the eyebrows of TFK fans. The energy level gives the music an almost pop/punk feel, not entirely unlike Relient K, but without drowning in all the irony (although irony does put in more than one appearance -- and he's not afraid of the pop culture references, either). These songs have more a quality of real fun than TFK's music -- as if you can tell that McNevan was having a blast while he wrote them.
While there's nothing remotely offensive to Christians included, it's only fair play to TFK fans go into this with the knowledge that What Are You Waiting For? was not fashioned to be theological brainfood; this is pure, unadulterated rock & roll music for music's sake. To that end, Aaron Sprinkle's full-throttle production keeps things appropriately heavy on the guitars and light on deep contemplations. Sometimes you just want to rock out. FM Static provides a 100% guilt-free soundtrack.
