One of the great outgrowths of the renewal of interest in worship music is the interest that is re-developing in hymns. Whether it is an outgrowth of the interest, or a backlash against some of the more simplistic worship choruses, hymns are receiving more interest today than they have in years, and the appreciation focuses on the fact that they contain greater depth and theological significance than most choruses of the day.
This new Passion album, Hymns Ancient and Modern, embodies that interest. Inspired by what may be the oldest surviving Christian hymn, the "Phos Hilaron," the album revels in the confessing hymns of the church, past and present. Recorded live, the album features the talents of lead-worshippers Matt Redman, David Crowder, Charlie Hall, Chris Tomlin, and Nathan and Christy Nockels (Watermark). Hymns Ancient and Modern is neither ancient nor overly modern, but a serviceable hymns project that should appeal to those who love the artists featured but are looking for something a little different.
