"Mental Releases" sowed Grits into the world 10 years ago, and over the past ten years, the fields have grown riper with each release. With the release of Dichotomy A and B this year, Grits hopes to celebrate the distance they've traveled, while plowing ahead, continuing the journey.
Dichotomy A, the first installation of the year's planned two-part release, sets the stage nicely with the opening track and lead single Hittin' Curves. The rest of the album takes the listener through a series of "curves," shifting apexes between the party grooves such as "Bobbin' Bouncin'" and "Sunshine", the low-key jazz infused gems "Pardon Me You" and "Get Down", and the somewhat experimental "Blowin' Your Mind." Utilizing organs, strings, even Neptune-esque tweaks and other sound effects, the orchestration present on many of the tracks adds to the diverse landscape of the album. (And of course there's plenty of that eight-oh-eight bass to thump in your ride).
Coffee and Bonafide have always had the knack of communicating their thoughts with an approach that avoids coming off as "agenda-driven" or over the top. This sincere and agreeable style has enabled each calculated career step, including the group's tempered "crossover" success. With a rich variety of musical components and styles, most listeners will find something positive to take away from their experience. Grits, with yet another pertinent release, continues to answer their call to reach a "nation [that's] lost but [has] no indication."
