Kierra Sheard, affectionately known as "Kiki", obviously carries with her a name made famous by previous generations. However, one listen to her debut project, I Owe You, makes it quite obvious to the listener that Kiki's music is not her mother's gospel music. Indeed, the face of gospel music has changed a lot over the years, gradually gaining a greater share of the younger listening market. Stylistically, Kiki falls more in line with Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary and Trin-i-tee 5:7 than with the Clark Sisters and Karen Clark Sheard.
Kiki Sheard bridges the gap between the gospel music of old and the gospel music to come. With a keen blend of traditional gospel elements (rhythm and blues feel, gospel message) and some modern methods (rap bridge in "Church Nite", vocal effects throughout), I Owe You will definitely grab the attention of a very broad audience, appeasing traditional gospel music fans and crossing over some younger members of the "hip hop" generation. Kiki proves with this release that she is poised to take the Clark/Sheard legacy boldly into the future, with her own spin on gospel music.
