Ripen is the follow up studio album to Simply Nothing from critically acclaimed, acoustic-soul, singer-songwriter Shawn McDonald. Since his official launch into the music scene in 2004, Shawn has sold over 100,000 units between Simply Nothing and Live In Seattle, garnered a #2 radio single (Gravity), toured with David Crowder Band, Bethany Dillon, Bebo Norman, Matthew West, and gains new fans everywhere he goes. Shawn’s live show is where he connects deeply with fans and therefore, he has been on the road non-stop for the last 14 months.
As the title of the new album suggests, Ripen allows us a front-row seat into Shawn’s continuing journey of faith as well as new developments into his music and songwriting. Some elements of Shawn’s music that captivate us are still present: the deep-felt, soul-stirring vocals, the haunting string arrangements, lyrics that are so honest they read like the Psalms, etc. However, the new elements are a welcome surprise such as bluesy slide guitar, harmonica, and one song that feels like an old spiritual with a gospel choir waiting in the wings. Lyrically, there is a sense of urgency and immediacy to Ripen. Songs like “Free” speak to the longing to be free from the baggage of the past or the burdens of the present; “I Am Nothing” is a song that speaks to the deep need and thirst for God daily as well as a reminder that our lives are not fulfilled without the love of God in us; “Take Hold” encourages us to not give up in the face of trials, opposition, or when you feel alone in the world – there is hope; “Perfectly Done” speaks to the insecurities we all face and that God sees us beautiful and wonderfully made; and “Ready” reminds us to live daily for Christ and be ready to not only share our faith but expect Christ’s return.
