For her seventeenth career album, entitled Legacy - Hymns & Faith, Grant abandons her pop thing in favor of faithful renditions of old hymns. A more appropriate title for this disc might have been Softly & Tenderly, because that's exactly the approach that Grant and producers Brown Bannister and hubby Vince Gill take to these old hymns. No grand, bombastic orchestrations, no vocal acrobatics, no modern upgrades. Each song sounds very much as though it could have been recorded back when most of these songs were first written.
Grant's Tennessee roots come out in full bloom, with country and bluegrass leanings in the production (but don't worry, it never goes over the top) and emotionally evocative performances in her vocals. Other artists, such as Crystal Lewis and 4Him, have produced hymns albums that boasted more powerful performances. But Grant obviously pours her heart into every note on Legacy -- you can hear her smiling at times, and her great reverence at others.
The song selection is just lovely, from timeless classics like "My Jesus, I Love Thee," "Be Still My Soul," "Fairest Lord Jesus," and "Holy, Holy, Holy," to inspired choices like "This Is My Father's World" and "Marching to Zion." Weighing in at a hefty fourteen tracks, the disc also includes a few brand new songs penned by Grant, such as the broken, honest "What You Already Own" and the soothing "Do You Remember The Time."
Legacy is a tender, faithful tribute to the songs that shaped the faith of the most prominent Christian artist of our time.
