Bringing to the table a nice combination of brand-new songs and recent worship standards, Worship God seems to have just the right mix of each to create the appropriate balance for St. James. Wisely, she returned to producer Matt Bronleewe for the entire album -- you may remember that Bronleewe's stuff on Transform, her last album, was the most critically-acclaimed. Bronleewe generates a great organic/electronic textured blend that allows St. James to bring herself and the listener into a state of humble worship.
But don't make the mistake of assuming that this is a slow, melancholy album. Far from it. She still knows how to rock, and she does it with no small amount of creativity, amping up several classics to pop/rock proportions that we've never heard them reach before. Among the highlights: Matt Redman's "Let My Words Be Few," which opens the album nicely; the modern classic "Breathe," which gets the full St. James treatment; the original "Quiet You With My Love," which is probably the hardest-rocking song on the album, but which carries a superb message of encouragement; the closing "You"; the completely new arrangement of "More Than the Watchmen"; and her re-makes of "God of Wonders" and "Above All." I have to admit, I was stunned that she chose to re-make two songs which have become such concrete signature songs for other artists, but she manages to create such different renditions of them that they seem like perfectly natural choices for her.
