More than just a clever title, Myself When I Am Real perfectly describes the contents of Bebo Norman's much talked-about third album. A more deeply personal and overwhelmingly frail collection of songs I don't think I've ever heard.
Musically, the album crosses elements from his first record, which was mostly quiet and acoustic, and his second record, which was folk/pop in nature, and combines them with a full breadth of instrumentation to create a richer, earthier sound than ever before.
Thematically, I don't think the album could possibly be any more personal to Norman, full of expressions of loneliness, happiness, fear, and most of all, love. These are Norman's deepest, darkest feelings, put on display for all to see. At times, it can even be uncomfortable to hear him being so vulnerable, but that's washed away when one realizes the courage it took for him to open himself up and fully show us his heart.
I would be remiss without mentioning the album's standout track, "Great Light of the World." Never has he been more poignant or vocally expressive -- or powerful. I don't think I've ever heard him belt it out with such fire as he does here. The song's gorgeous melody and message make it an instant classic.
