Michael Card and his crew were involved in a multiple car pile up on the snowy roads outside of Vail, CO, this past Tuesday. The entire front section of Card's bus was crushed, but the driver of the bus miraculously escaped without injury; Card, however, did sustain injuries and was taken immediately to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with acromioclavicular (AC) separation in his left shoulder. Doctors are waiting until the swelling goes down to ascertain whether or not damage was done to his rotator cuff.
“Michael is in a lot of pain right now, but his spirits are good,” said Ron Davis, Card’s road manager. “As for the bus driver, after looking at the damage done at the front of the bus, I’m not sure how he survived, especially without injury.”
The tour bus skidded on icy roads and had slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer and barely avoided a much worse scenario, landing against the guard rail that separated them from a 50 foot drop-off.
“We had the chance to see the accident site the next day and it made me sick to my stomach to realize how close we came to going over,” said Card.
Card flew home from Denver Wednesday afternoon and will be getting some rest before resuming touring for his upcoming album, A Fragile Stone. Even though doctors say it will be 8 weeks before he’s fully recovered, he has enough mobility in his left arm to make his next scheduled date in Minneapolis, MN on March 7-8 with Phil Keaggy.
