Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ released on DVD and
video yesterday to immediate boffo sales numbers. Over 2.4 million copies
had been sold by mid-day alone, and by the end of the day 4.1 million had sold.
That number is the most ever for an R-rated film. Finding Nemo
holds the one-day record for DVD sales, with 8 million.
The Passion of the Christ is the second highest grossing movie of
2004. It's $370 million box office gross has it topping Spiderman
2 and coming in only behind Shrek 2.
CMCentral will continue to cover the Passion numbers for this week,
as both consumers and churches continue to rush to the stores through the
holiday weekend.
